As the most expensive replacement part on an e-bike, it's worth the extra time and effort to keep your battery healthy. For this reason, even seemingly obvious tips are worth repeating.
Follow these tips to get the best performance and life from your e-bike battery.
.Charge the battery before the battery reaches 30%. The battery is at its healthiest when it remains at 30% or above. When you're out riding, keep an eye on the battery level. It is shown on the display of your e-bike. When your battery drops to 20% or even 10%, you run the risk of losing power before returning to the charging station. Not only does this put you at risk of pedaling alone on the long or hilly journey home, but it also puts unnecessary strain on the battery. Over time, this accelerates the natural degradation process. If you're going to be riding for a long time, it's probably just a fact of life that your battery will run low. Take it easy -- just know that the battery will last a little longer if it's fully charged。
.Do not charge or use the battery on the bicycle when it is hot. There are many reasons for a battery to get hot. On very warm days, the outside temperature can cause the battery to overheat. Climbing steep terrain can cause the motor to heat up - and possibly the battery as well. Another cause of a battery heating is using a charger with a higher voltage than the battery. But whatever the reason, your reaction to a hot battery should always be the same: Let it cool down before continuing to use or charge it.
.Do not charge it immediately after use. Even if your battery doesn't feel hot, give it a rest when you get home from your ride. You don't have to wait long - the battery recovers quickly from use. You can use this time to hang up your helmet, take off your shoes, or even get a quick clean or tune up on your bike. In less than 5 minutes, you can charge your battery and be ready for your next ride.
.Do not use immediately after charging. Do you see a pattern? When it comes to e-bike battery care, patience is a virtue! If you're going to be going out in your car soon, unplug the charger a few minutes before heading out. This precious reset gives your battery time to prepare to transfer power to the motor you ride.
.Unplug the battery when fully charged. When your battery reaches 80% to 100% charge, continue to unplug the charger. Don't worry; your battery will hold its charge until your next ride! This is important because while you won't actually be able to fully charge the battery, continuing to charge it after it's fully charged could drain the battery.
.Keep the battery at a suitable temperature. When not riding, store batteries near room temperature: 68°F/20°C or slightly lower. Feel free to store your bike in a weatherproof garage or shed, out of the element's elements - but if the temperature drops far above or below 68°F/20°C, bring the battery inside.
.Do not get the battery wet. The same goes for any battery, really! Your battery has a sealed waterproof cover to protect it from the rain while you ride. Where you need to be careful is cleaning and storing your bike and its battery. You might want to use a pressure washer to quickly remove dirt and grime from your bike, but the strong stream of water can pass through the seal and damage the inside of the battery. Store your e-bike inside when you're not riding it. Over time, excessive and continuous exposure to rain and snow can damage the waterproof casing.
.I wish you the best of luck. Whether you're transporting your e-bike on a frame or in a bike box, be sure to remove the battery beforehand. This protects it from damage or accidental loss. Remember, you also need to protect the battery from rain and snow! So taking the bike off before putting it on the rack is the best way to keep the battery dry while traveling.
.Learn what to expect from winter performance. In addition to protecting your battery from snow and extreme cold, be aware that e-bike batteries are less efficient in the cold. That means they may lose mileage in extremely cold temperatures. Keep your rides to a minimum, or at least make sure you're able to charge the battery frequently during long rides. But don't worry; performance will bounce back when temperatures return.
.Always use the correct charger. Your e-bike came with a charger made for that model; use it! It is critical to battery health that the charger and battery are compatible and operate at the same voltage. Otherwise, at best you'll see extended charging times -- and at worst, you could blow up the battery.
